Offering a total of 32 transponders (28 Ku-band, 4 Ka-band) and eight SKYPLEX units for on-board multiplexing, HOT BIRD™ 6 delivers digital television and radio channels to satellite and cable homes in Europe, North Africa and large parts of the Middle East, reinforcing one of the largest broadcasting systems in the world. In addition to broadcast television services, the system provides both interactive as well as multimedia services over the same wide coverage area and for professional applications such as videoconferencing, LAN interconnection, e-learning, Telemedecine, media & corporate file delivery, game networks and much more. The HOT BIRD™ 6 satellite introduces Ka-band services for the first time to complement the extensive range of Ku-band services already provided from 13 degrees East. The satellite provides four transponders operating at Ka-band in conjunction with a western European coverage. There is a high degree of operational flexibility including, in particular, the possibility for SKYPLEX DATA operation at Ka-band. The Ka-band payload can deliver fully interactive DVB IP as well as DVB services to small businesses equipped with transmit/receive antennas as small as 90 cm in diameter. When combined with SKYPLEX DATA, broadcasting from small transmitting terminals, or "micro-broadcasting", is possible for the first time. This underlines Eutelsat's strategy of addressing the multimedia market and facilitating the development of innovative interactive digital applications.
