The W4 satellite provides a high-power broadcast coverage of Western Russia with a total of nineteen channels. In addition, the satellite provides a wide-area African coverage and a high-power Steerable coverage. The African coverage includes the majority of central and southern Africa. In its nominal operational position, the Steerable coverage provides a high power coverage of West Africa. Six channels are connected to each beam on the downlink, giving a total of thirty-one operational channels. The satellite design allows transmission from the Steerable coverage to the African coverage and vice versa, permitting, for example, simultaneous broadcasting to both coverages.
